January 15, 2009 - Our New Addition

Peter Edward Skutnik arrived at 7:42 pm on January 15, 2009. 11 days early! We were scheduled for an ultrasound the following day to check my fluid levels which were on the low end and we were anticipating my dr. to schedule an induction. Peter clearly had his own plan in mind and that was to evacuate early on his own! My labor began in the afternoon on the 14th. I was not feeling well and was a bit crampy at work. By the time I got home, I was increasingly uncomfortable and curled up on the couch not sure if I was actually in labor or if this was just how things might go for the next week or so. The pain was not letting up, but I did not want to go to the hospital because I was worried they would send me home. I waited until about 7:00 when my "contractions" were about 5-6 minutes apart to call the dr. and she instructed me to wait until they were 3 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute for an hour. She told me to eat something and stay hydrated so I had a PB & J. Pete timed them over the next few hours and they were still a bit irregular. We decided to go to bed and see what happened. I was making some calls to be sure that Alison could watch Patsy if we needed to go in. Luckily she was around! We went to bed and the contractions got more regular and at 2 am we decided it was time to head to the hospital. It was exciting but scary at the same time and I was shaking the entire way there! Once we were checked we were sent to triage and I was 3 cm. They had me walk around until about 4:30 am until they moved us into a labor room. I spent several hours walking the halls on the unit in my gown and patent leather clogs! I had terrible back labor since Peter was facing the wrong direction. It was very painful! We called my mom and tried to convince her not to rush up since it could be several hours, but she still got there by 10:00. I got an epideral around the same time and it was great! I didn't feel much of anything except I did get pretty nauseas and was given some medication which helped. We had a little scare at one point because I was on my side and the heartrate dropped so several nurses rushed in and they had to give me oxygen, but luckily it returned to normal when I shifted my position so things settled down again. The nurse assured me that they can have a baby out in minutes if they need to. The rest of the day was spent lying around....waiting. A couple hours before the actual delivery, my epidural pump was empty and I was starting to feel A LOT of pain. It seemed like an eternity before the anestesiologist came in to give me another dose...just in time because I was getting closer to delivery. At that point my legs felt like they weighed 300 pounds...each! I could not move them at all! It was a very weird feeling. Around 7:00 the nurse who had been with me the night before came back for her next shift....I was still there! Luckily, shortly after she arrived I finally started feeling pressure and it was time to push! When the Dr. checked me, the head was already crowning! After 27+hours of labor it took about 15 minutes, 4 contractions, and about 5 pushes to get him out! THANK GOODNESS!!! I was so exhausted, I was not sure if I would be able to push for hours!

Peter weighed in at 6 lbs. 12 oz. and 19 in. long. He had a ridiculous cone head from being squished down there for so long, but he was healthy! He had to go to be checked by the pediatician right away because I had developed a fever and that is a risk to the baby, but luckily he was fine. Pete went with him while the Dr. finished with me. I felt SO much better immediatly after and was STARVING!!!

Before sending me up to my postpartum room the nurses let Mom, Alison, and Kristin up to meet Baby (he didn't actually have a name yet) since they had been waiting downstairs for hours!

We spent the next day and a half at the hospital recovering and getting to know our son!
